The value of the individual strong in mind, body and spirit is immeasurable. Therefore, a major underlying premise of the model used at Shakti Rising is that for recovery to be successful it must be transformative.
In order for transformation to occur within the Apprentices, the interventions must extend far beyond the boundaries of traditional recovery as usually defined in social services and/or medical intervention models.
The interventions themselves must: encompass all aspects of a person’s being; be empowering, supportive and confrontational; involve education on all levels; be long-term; involve the participants’ return to their own sense of self; include exploration of each individual’s sense of life purpose; occur within in a community; have clear demarcations of progress (celebrations, milestones, rituals); and finally, culminate in the translation of the individual process of transformation into acts of social change. This model of change is rooted in the activity of daily life, because it is within this context that the interventions must occur.
Our organization embraces individual empowerment and community interdependence because both are critical components of a healthy, meaningful life. To simultaneously address the multiple needs of each whole person as well as the community, we have created an approach that is holistic and diverse. Through counseling and life skills education, young women learn how to take care of themselves while in relationship to other people. They also learn how to draw from personal experiences to create change in the environment around them. Thus, personal healing is an act of social change. By undergoing individual healing, young women are able to take action to improve their families, communities, and society as a whole. They learn to solve problems starting within themselves, and then extend this skill outward into their circles of friends, family, work and the greater community. This inevitably affects the global community and will shape the future of our world.
