Shakti is a Sanskrit term that loosely translated means life force. It is a creative, dynamic feminine energy that exists inside each of us. When we are vibrantly alive, Shakti rises up our spines and we manifest our full brilliance and thereby fulfill our own unique life purpose.
What is the Shakti definition of recovery?
Recovery is the decision to live and to take responsibility for your own life, which begins by admitting you have a problem and acknowledging that you want to change. It is a restorative healing process requiring willingness to let go of addictions and self-destructive attitudes while embracing change. The process uncovers the underlying emotions that triggered your self-destructive reactions. Old behaviors and attitudes are replaced with an awareness of your Self, deepened interactions with others, and reconnection with your sense of Spirit. Through this process you reclaim your purpose and over time become a healthy, whole, productive individual, able to live out your dreams.
Is Shakti Rising a religious program ?
No, we are not a religious organization. Our focus on spirituality is non-religious, embracing all spiritual and religious paths. Our program aims to help women discover their own individual and unique spiritual connection and a spiritual practice that is right for them.
What if I can't afford services or have low income?
No one will be denied services for lack of resources. Payment plans are available for all of our services. Sliding scale based fees are also available for those who qualify.
How is this program different from traditional recovery programs?
Many traditional recovery programs combine the medical model of recovery with 12 Step Programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous. At Shakti Rising we do not subscribe to the disease model of recovery, although we do incorporate the teachings of 12 Step Programs when appropriate.
Are there residential services?
Yes, our recovery program is available on both a live-in or live-out basis. The live in program is frequently referred to as the “fast track to recovery” and requires at least a one-year commitment. This intensive Apprenticeship involves required classes, counseling sessions and projects.
Are there residential services for men?
Yes, young men ages 15-25 may participate in our Lifescripts program, the drop in recovery group and some educational classes and special events. Currently, there is no Apprenticeship program for men.
Is Shakti Rising a cult?
No, we are a conscious community of women working on our individual and collective healing. While we do have strong philosophical beliefs as regards recovery and the importance of healing work, we respect all the differing beliefs of our community. In addition, we are a tax-exempt non-profit organization governed by an active Director’s Circle (Board of Directors). Our organization actively participates in improving community well being and is informally affiliated with other non-profits and activist groups in San Diego.
